In 2015 María filmed an episode of Bizarre Foods with Chef Andrew Zimmern in Oaxaca. In the episode, which aired in November of that year on the Travel Channel, María served as a translator and guide for Andrew, and they discussed traditional Oaxacan cuisine and the future of sustainable food. Zimmern crowned her the “Queen of Oaxaca” given her knowledge and love of the rich culture of her birthplace.
María was born and raised in the southern state of Oaxaca, Mexico. She graduated from Universidad Autónoma de México, UNAM, with a bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature and she specialized in Translation. Fluent in both Spanish and English, she does written and simultaneous translation for non-profit organizations. She provides "cultural translations" and finds creative solutions for travelers and projects that have specific interests in Mexico. She has collaborated with chefs, designers, photographers and produced different documentary films, and research journeys.
